4 Tips for Making Your Ceilings Feel Taller

Low ceilings can make a space feel cramped and congested. But let’s face it, not all of us are blessed with tall, grand ceilings. If you’re in the same boat, we have some good news for you; there are interior design tricks that can make your ceilings feel taller without breaking the walls! If you want to learn more, follow us through this blog post.

Incorporate Low-Slung, Minimalist Furniture

Furniture that sits low with the floor allows for more visible wall space behind it. This creates an illusion of a higher wall, making your ceiling feel taller. Ensuring the furniture design is minimal is a bonus — it draws less attention and keeps the focus on the empty wall space above. With that being said, you may also want to opt for minimal artwork and keep your walls largely bare.

Opt For Vertically-Striped Wall applications

Create an accent wall in your space using vertically-striped wallpaper or wall applications. Vertical stripes guide the eye upwards, creating an illusion of more height. Pick a color from the wallpaper, using it for the furniture piece to place against the wall for a coherent look.

For the rest of the walls, use one continuous color from the floor to the ceiling (including the woodwork around the door and any architectural features you may have). This makes them appear as part of the wall, adding to its height. Bonus points if you continue the color all the way up to the ceiling, too!

Consider Your Light Fixtures

As much as you love elaborate chandeliers, they’re not the best choice if you have low-lying ceilings. The same applies to other lighting fixtures that hang low. Instead, opt for more compact lighting fixtures, such as flush mounts. These will add to the aesthetics while taking up less empty space, and prevent your room from looking cramped.

Correctly Position Window Treatments

Leveraging your wall with window(s) is a must for making your ceilings feel taller. Install your curtain rods nearer to the ceiling — even if it means going inches above the top of the actual window. As a rule of thumb, the higher the placement of the rod, the taller your window (and hence, wall) will appear. This, again, makes your ceiling feel taller than it actually is.

Whether you want to make your ceilings feel taller in a single room or your entire house, the 4 tips stated above are bound to do the trick!
